NOTE: You can download German version of the tutorial here.
NOTE 2: You can download Polish version of the tutorial here

Today I have some exciting news for you - I prepared downloadable (PDF) version of my free HDR tutorial. It's almost exactly the same as the one on this website but I know that some people prefer reading PDFs or printing tutorials and HTML version isn't really printer-friendly.

So without further ado you can download PDF here (right-click on the link and select Save Target As to save it to your disk):

It's one of the longest and most comprehensive HDR tutorials you will find and it's completely free! Feel free to share this link.

Important: If you want to share the tutorial feel free to do that but please provide the link to this blog (http://hdrphotographer.blogspot.com/) when doing so.

BTW when preparing this PDF file I realized that my HDR tutorial has around 60 A4 pages... I wasn't aware it's that long... :)

Before/after comparison: Golden clouds

before after
It's time for yet another before/after comparison + some post-processing details (for more comparisons like this one go here), where I share my post-processing workflow.

Today a photo I took during beautiful sunset by the lake. Warm light turned clouds into real gold (or gems). This scene was extreme example of why HDR is sometimes necessary - the highlights in the 0 EV photo (Before) are completely blown out making the sky look completely white... Also shadows are way too dark. Thanks to HDR I was able to restore them. I decided to take 7 exposures spaced at 1 EV to capture whole dynamic range of the scene. To learn more about HDR photography, read my HDR tutorial.

Colourful sunset

Colourful sunset
Click on the photo to view it in large size on black background.
Today I would like to share HDR photo of a sunset I took last summer in a beautiful region of Masuria in Poland (this place is great for photographing beautiful sunrises and sunsets!). The colours were really gorgeous and together with very calm water (there were just a few ripples that I got rid of using longer exposure) created great atmosphere. Tranquillity, silence - it was all about that.

BTW I'm happy to announce that my collection of free autumn presets for Lightroom has been now downloaded 200 times :) If you still haven't downloaded it, click here to get it.

Starry sky

Milky Way over Corralejo beach
Click on the photo to view it in large size on black background.

It's getting colder outside - probably soon we will have first snow fall of this year. The sky is overcast most of the time, there is no sunshine at all and it's foggy quite often so I don't take much photos recently. Thanks to that I have time to process some older images and work on my post-processing skills a little bit.

So today I would like to share a photo I took last year on Fuerteventura island during the night and processed very recently. The key to get such amazing look of the sky, apart from clear air and very fast lens (I shot this at f/1.4!), was to use Topaz Clarity filter. This filter is absolutely fantastic when increasing clarity is concerned. I no longer use Lightroom Clarity slider because compared to Topaz it's very poor (and I loved it until I discovered Topaz Clarity!).

To learn how to capture photos of starry skies like the one above, read my tutorial.

Photomatix Pro 5 is released - what's new?

Hala Gąsienicowa in Tatra Mountains
One of the many photos I processed with Contrast Optimizer - new tone-mapper available in Photomatix Pro 5.
You might have heard the news already. Photomatix Pro 5, was officially released yesterday!

I'm super happy and excited to work for HDRsoft. Reading first positive reviews on Photomatix Pro 5, make me feel really awesome and proud. You know, I'm software developer after all. I create software. As weird as it might sound creating code is my passion, something I do for more than 16 years (I started at the age of 10 :) ) and I don't feel bored with it. Not bored at all.

Ok, without further ado, to download Photomatix Pro 5, simply go here:
Also note that if you bought version 4.x (4.0 or 4.2 for instance) the upgrade is free for you. Here's a quote from HDRsoft website:

The upgrade to Photomatix Pro version 5 will be free of charge for customers who purchased a license of Photomatix Pro version 4.0 or higher through our website or authorised resellers (Photomatix Pro 4.0 was released on October 2010).

If you bought earlier version (3.2 for instance), upgrade to version 5.0 will cost you just 29 USD.

BTW make sure to read my updated HDR tutorial which is now updated for Photomatix Pro 5.

New version of HDR tutorial

Dolina Kościeliska in Tatra Mountains
Above image was processed using new feature available in Photomatix Pro 5 - Contrast Optimizer - new tonemapper producing very realistic images.
As you might already know, Photomatix Pro 5, was released today (you can download it from HDRsoft website) after a few weeks of public beta tests.

For that reason I decided to share updated version of my HDR tutorial: http://hdrphotographer.blogspot.com/p/hdr-tutorial.html. I made a lot of changes in it. From small corrections, to rewriting whole sections and adding new ones. Also it's now updated for Photomatix Pro 5 and describes various features present in it. I still plan to add a few things in next few weeks.

Hopefully you will like it. Previous version of HDR tutorial was displayed about 30.000 times making it the most popular page on my blog. I hope the new version will be as popular as previous one (or even more :) ).

Today just a photo without much description. Taken last year in one of many Lisbon churches. I'm really happy about the light and mood I got here. The noise is quite strong (mainly due to hight ISO) but in fact in this very case I like it because it helps building the effect I wanted to achieve.

Changes to the blog

Street in Lisbon
Click on the photo to view it in large size on black background.
I decided to make some changes to the blog one more time :) Most of the things are bug fixes in website code and blog template (so they are mostly transparent to you) but I also changed a few things that you will see. I made Related Posts widget a bit more fancy (with some animation and stuff like that), slightly improved readability of Photography Tutorials section (I intend to make even more adjustments to it so it's easier to find interesting content there), I reduced number of posts shown on home page to just 5 (from 15!) to increase readability of the blog and to reduce load times which were quite long especially on mobile devices.

I also improved Lightbox. When you click on any photo on this site it will be shown in larger size on black background what is normally much better to view my photos.

Finally I added a map to posts containing photos (majority of them does...). In fact, in the past I added it from time to time but I did it manually so it was a tedious process and after some time I stopped doing so. However, this time map is added automatically (ok... almost). I hope it will give you a better idea where I take my photos and who knows, maybe one day you will capture a photo from the very same spot as I did?

I'm in the process of making further changes and adjustments and hopefully you'll notice them in a few days. There are some bigger changes coming so stay tuned.

Today HDR photo was taken in February 2012. Just 1.5 year ago yet it seems so long! My post-processing and photography technique and skills have evolved since there pretty much I think. I'm much more aware of what I'm doing and what I want to achieve with particular photos. I focus more on the artistic aspect of taking photos - I don't need to spend several minutes trying to figure out what exposure to set or trying various techniques blindly hoping one of them will work.

BTW it's quite unfortunate that I don't remember location where I took this photo so on the map you will see a pin in the middle of Lisbon. If by any luck you know where it is exactly, let me know and I'll be happy to update location.

Technical details:
Camera: Canon 5D MK II

Before/after comparison: Ducks Race

before after
It's time for yet another before/after comparison + some post processing details (for more comparisons like this one go here), where I share my post-processing workflow. This time - Smreczynski Pond (Staw Smreczynski) a small yet very beautiful lake in Tatra mountains. When I was taking some landscape photos there a group of ducks appeared out of nowhere and with quite a great speed they raced through the lake, hence the title of this photo - Ducks Race.

This time I took 5 exposures at 1 EV spacing, and used manual blending. However, during manual blending I dropped +2 EV exposure because it didn't provide any improvement to image quality. In this case 0 EV photo is Before and final processed image is After. As you can see the difference isn't huge. I wanted to keep the final image as close to the original as possible.

Some of you might wonder why did I use manual blending in this case? Well, there is no particular reason. I just want to know various techniques and although I use Photomatix Pro 99% of the time when I process HDR images (because I'm happy with the results) sometimes I just try something different.

Kasprowy Wierch mountain offers some fantastic views over Hala Gasienicowa and valley of Stawy Gasienicowe and you can see both in the photo above. What's interesting is that in winter this mountain is opened for ski tourists offering some great experiences (there aren't many ski routes that long and beautiful as that one).

Another interesting thing is that the mountain delineates the border between Poland and the Slovak Republic. On the summit you will find signs in both languages and if the weather permits, you can easily cross the border there especially as both countries belong to Schengen zone.

Debod Temple is a very interesting place in Madrid, Spain because the ruins come from... Egypt. They were transported in pieces and reassembled in one of Madrid parks as a gift for Spanish help given to Egypt during excavations there.

So today I have one for you. This time I will show you how to process golden hour HDR photo using Adobe Lightroom, Photomatix Pro and Topaz Clarity and Topaz Adjust. Please note it's not my regular workflow but first I need to introduce all filters and techniques I use before showing "real" workflow I use on a daily basis. Next time I hope to start talking about luminosity masks that I use mainly to fine-tune tone-mapped image.

So without further ado here is the video:

Note: read part 2 of the comparison here.

In the past, things were easy. Everyone used Flickr to share their photos. No one complained because there wasn't much choice. Nowadays things are much more complex as there are dozens of websites where photographers can share their work, with most popular being 500px, Flickr, Google+ and Facebook.

Unfortunately none of these is ideal and in this post I will try to write a short comparison.

First of all I'm happy to announce that you can read interview with me on 7tutorials website: http://www.7tutorials.com/uncovering-artists-through-windows-themes-wojciech-toman. You can also download Windows 7 & 8 theme from there that features some of my photos.

I also made some small changes to the blog. First of all I made background much darker so it should be less distracting and made a few other cosmetic design changes with more to come in days to follow. Finally I added location link to posts. Clicking on it will show you location on Google maps where I took given photo. It should give you better ideas on interesting spots if you plan to visit same places as I did.

Today photo was taken from the saddle below Kondracka Kopa. It was very cold and windy when I was there (on that day wind known as Halny blew there) so I didn't get closer to the ridge to get better photo as I didn't find this very safe to do. Sun at night

Probably one of my best of all recent photos (it got almost 20.000 views in just a few hours on Google+). Milky Way and the sun at the same time... wait a second... sun? at night? Well, it's a little cheat of course. In fact it's full moon. But by overexposing it a little bit I managed to get this quite surreal effect.

To create this photo I took 5 exposures which I then merged to vertorama (vertorama is nothing else but vertical panorama) using PTGui.

Blue hour in Warsaw

Blue hour in Warsaw

Today I intended to publish new tutorial finally. Unfortunately lack of time didn't allow me to finish it on time so I will publish it later this week. So instead I would like to share a blue hour photo from Warsaw. Processed using Contrast Optimizer in Photomatix Pro and finished with luminosity masks in Photoshop.

As you have maybe noticed in my photos I often use apertures of f/7.1 - f/11 (depending on the lens) even when I use wide angle lenses. If you're into landscape photography you probably know that wide angle lenses produce enough depth of field even when using them wide open. But there is one more factor - sharpness. Each of the apertures produces images differing in sharpness and after some experimentation I found these apertures to be the sharpest ones for the lenses I own. If you would like to find sharpest aperture of your lens, read this tutorial.

Before/after comparison: on the track

before after

It's time for yet another before/after comparison + some post processing details (for more comparisons like this one go here), where I share my post-processing workflow. This time the very beautiful Hala Gąsienicowa in Polish Tatra Mountains. In this case the light was quite weird if I may put it this way. In foreground the light was very bright and warm but background was hidden in the shadow cast by the clouds making it look dark and sad.

This time I took only 3 exposures at 2 EV spacing, merged them to HDR and tone-mapped in Photomatix Pro using Details Enhancer at the very soft settings because I wanted tone-mapped image to look very close to 0 EV photo (which is Before). In this case I used HDR and tone-mapping mainly to restore details in the clouds. Then I edited my image with luminosity masks technique in Photoshop CC (After).

On the Ridge

When after a long and exhausting climb I finally reached a saddle below Kondracka Kopa, the weather was really amazing offering fantastic views on both sides of the ridge. Clouds together with sun light created some very nice light & shadows play on the mountains. Also there were some beautiful textures and details there so I decided to go with black & white processing.

As you can see there are quite a few tourists in this shot. Normally I would remove them in Photoshop but I decided to leave them this time because they give pretty nice sense of scale.
